Yes. An outdoor kitchen can certainly be placed outdoors without a canopy, provided you choose the right materials. Still, it's a question we hear very often. And that's logical. An outdoor kitchen is a serious investment, and you want to be sure it can withstand our climate. Rain, wind, frost, and bright sun: your kitchen will have to endure it all.

In this article, we explain when an outdoor kitchen without a canopy works perfectly, when extra protection is smart, and which choices make the difference in lifespan and ease of use.

Why do people hesitate about this?

It's a feeling that goes against your instincts. You buy a beautiful, luxurious product, and then you just put it outside in the rain? That feels unnatural. But the honest answer is: if the outdoor kitchen is made of materials specifically designed for outdoor use, then protection is not strictly necessary. A Roostr outdoor kitchen can stay outside 365 days a year. That's what it's made for.

Can an outdoor kitchen withstand rain?

Every component counts

At Roostr, we ensure that every component of the outdoor kitchen is resistant to rain and moisture. From the countertop to the smallest screws. We don't compromise on that. Because it's precisely that one component that isn't weather-resistant that causes problems in the long run.

Stainless steel as a base

The core of our outdoor kitchens is stainless steel (RVS). This material does not rust and is therefore perfectly suited for intensive outdoor use. We finish it with a three-layer powder coating that offers extra protection while also providing the color and look you desire.

The countertops are made of Dekton: resistant to heat up to 250°C, scratches, stains, frost, and UV radiation. A material specifically designed to remain beautiful outdoors for years.

What if you choose the wrong materials?

Then you'll notice it sooner than you think. With wooden outdoor kitchens, the construction will start to warp: doors that no longer open or close, mold formation, wood rot, and discoloration. In the worst case, planks break, and the structure becomes unstable. That can actually become dangerous, especially when working with a kamado, gas barbecue, or open fire.

With other materials not specifically designed for outdoor use, you'll see rust formation, discoloration, and accelerated wear. The difference between an outdoor kitchen that looks worn after two years and one that still looks new after twenty years? That lies entirely in the choice of materials.

Without a canopy: when does it work well?

The material determines everything

An outdoor kitchen without a canopy works fine when the entire product is made of weather-resistant materials. That's really the only condition. If that's the case, you don't have to worry about rain, frost, or sun.

Every garden setup is possible

It doesn't matter which setup you choose. Choose what works best for your cooking style, or what looks best in your garden. So you can optimally enjoy it when the sun shines or the weather is dry.

Smartly dealing with rain exposure

Although a canopy is not necessary, you can limit the stress on your outdoor kitchen with a few smart choices:

  • Materials: ceramics, stainless steel, and powder-coated steel prevent wear and discoloration

  • Positioning: by placing the kitchen just out of the dominant wind direction, you significantly reduce driving rain

  • Protective covers: useful for periods when the kitchen is not used for a long time

At Roostr, we always extensively consider these aspects. We look at wind direction, sun position, and rain impact to determine the best spot in your garden.

Under a canopy: when is that smart?

The advantages of a canopy

A canopy is not necessary for the protection of your outdoor kitchen, but it does make a big difference in comfort and use.

Weather-independent cooking. Rain or bright sun no longer affect your plans. You can always go outside.

Season extension. From early spring deep into autumn, and with a garden room, even all year round.

More comfort. Equipment, worktop, and accessories stay cleaner and drier, making use more pleasant.

Atmospheric setting. A canopy provides space for lighting, heaters, and decoration. Ideal for evenings when you like to linger outdoors.

Stronger integration with the home. Especially when the canopy connects to the house, a seamless transition between inside and outside is created.

When do we recommend a canopy?

We recommend a canopy if you want to cook outdoors all year round, if your garden has little natural shelter, or if the outdoor kitchen will be used intensively. Extra shelter is also nice for luxury equipment such as a pizza oven or built-in refrigerator. And if the outdoor kitchen is part of a total concept (think of a garden room or veranda with a dining table), a canopy becomes indispensable.

What should you pay attention to when placing it under a canopy?

Ventilation. Always ensure sufficient air circulation. Open sides, louvers, or sliding walls help to dissipate smoke, heat, and odors. This is essential, especially with barbecues or pizza ovens.

Heat dissipation. A kamado or pizza oven produces a lot of heat. Keep sufficient distance from walls and roof construction, and preferably work with heat-resistant materials in the immediate vicinity.

Height and space. The canopy must be spacious enough to cook and move comfortably. Consider sufficient headroom (especially when opening a kamado), enough distance above heat sources, and space to work around the kitchen.

Positioning of equipment. Place heat sources strategically, for example, closer to the open side of the canopy for better ventilation.

But don't worry: we have delivered many projects and know exactly what to look for. We plan this out completely and advise where necessary.

Each season its own way of outdoor living

A canopy not only changes how often you cook outdoors but also how you experience each season.

Spring. You start earlier in the season. Where it's normally still chilly and changeable, a canopy provides comfort and shelter.

Summer. On warm days, a canopy offers cooling and shade. You don't cook in direct sunlight, which makes it much more pleasant.

Autumn. This is where a canopy really makes a difference. Rain and wind have less impact, so outdoor cooking and dining can continue.

Winter. In combination with heaters, lighting, and possibly glass sliding walls, the outdoor kitchen becomes a fully-fledged outdoor space. You might use it differently (shorter, more intimate), but still regularly.

The effect on frequency of use

Without a canopy, outdoor cooking remains more weather-dependent. When in doubt, people are more likely to choose to cook indoors. With a canopy, that behavior changes: the threshold for cooking outdoors lowers, it becomes part of your routine (not just on weekends), and the space becomes multifunctional. Not just for cooking, but also for drinks, dining, and relaxation. As a result, you simply get more value from your investment.

Common mistakes and misunderstandings

The biggest mistake

The most common mistake is actually very simple: there is no integrated thinking about the outdoor kitchen in relation to the garden, the space, and its use. Measurements, wind direction, walking routes, and ventilation are overlooked. With the right guidance, you can prevent this.

Persistent misunderstandings

"An outdoor kitchen cannot withstand rain." This is not true. Provided the right materials are used, an outdoor kitchen is specifically designed to be outdoors. Rain is not a problem; standing water and poor finishing are.

"You always need a canopy." Not necessarily. A well-designed outdoor kitchen can do perfectly fine without one. A canopy is primarily about comfort and use, not just protection.

"Under a canopy, you have no maintenance." This is also a misconception. Dirt, grease, and weather influences will still be present. Maintenance remains important, though often slightly less intensive.

"A cover solves everything." A cover can help, but it's not a substitute for good design and material use. Without ventilation, a cover can actually trap moisture.

"Everything automatically stays beautiful." Just like with an indoor kitchen, use and maintenance determine how something looks over time. Regular cleaning significantly extends its lifespan.

Smart choices for a longer lifespan

Durability is not a single characteristic, but the result of smart choices in design, material, and use. Three factors work together:

Placement. The location in the garden directly affects wear and tear. Out of the strong wind means less exposure to rain and dirt. Not continuously in direct sunlight prevents discoloration. Shelter from walls or greenery extends the lifespan of materials.

Materials. This is the foundation. Weather-resistant materials mean less maintenance, quality finishing prevents long-term problems, and consistent material choices ensure a durable whole.

Covering. A canopy structurally reduces exposure to rain and UV. A cover is useful for prolonged non-use, provided it's well-ventilated. The combination of both offers maximum protection and ease of use.

Together, these three elements determine how much an outdoor kitchen has to endure and how much maintenance is needed to keep it in top condition.

From doubt to the right choice

The 3D configurator

With our 3D configurator, you can immediately see what your outdoor kitchen will look like. You can experiment with layouts, colors, and configurations and get a feel for the proportions. The configurator shows the outdoor kitchen without a canopy, so you get a clear idea of the product itself.

What customers often truly experience only when they see the outdoor kitchen in 3D or in real life: the feeling for the product and the feeling for the material. That's something photos alone cannot convey.
